Necrotizing fasciitis is a serious and rapidly progressive infection of the fascia that usually is a complication from an originating skin infection that can occur anywhere on the body. This condition is a medical emergency that involves rapid diagnosis, broad-spectrum antibiotics, cardiopulmonary support, and the standard treatment of aggressive surgical removal of necrotic tissue. Although initial management of the infection is of utmost importance, the resulting soft tissue defects are essential to reconstruct as they can lead to serious functional and aesthetic problems.
Necrotizing fasciitis can encompass a multitude of systems such as muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, and other tissues during the course of infection.
